Exploring Heritage of Hong Kong: A Memorable Life-wide Learning Day at Tai Kwun

On the vibrant morning of March 26, 2024, the students and teachers of Pui Ying Secondary School embarked on an exciting journey to Tai Kwun, located in the heart of Central Hong Kong. This Life-wide Learning Day offered a unique opportunity for Secondary 3 students to explore the rich heritage, historical significance, and ongoing revitalization efforts of this iconic site. The day was filled with enlightening experiences, including guided tours of the Police Headquarters, Central Magistracy, and the Victoria Prison, as well as engaging interviews with both local and Western foreigners about heritage conservation in Hong Kong.

Immersive Guided Tour

The first leg of the day's itinerary involved guided tours of the Police Headquarters, Central Magistracy, and the Victoria Prison, which are all located within the Tai Kwun complex. These remarkable historical landmarks have witnessed the transformation of Hong Kong's legal system over the years. Led by knowledgeable guides, students were taken on a captivating journey through time, unraveling the stories of law enforcement, judicial proceedings, and incarceration in Hong Kong's past.

 

The Police Headquarters tour shed light on the history and evolution of the Hong Kong Police Force. Students had the opportunity to explore the former Central Police Station compound, gaining insights into the important role the police have played in maintaining law and order in the city.

At the Central Magistracy, students gained a deeper understanding of the judicial system in Hong Kong. They were able to observe courtrooms where justice was served and learn about the legal processes that took place within those hallowed walls. The tour provided students with a firsthand glimpse into the significant role the judiciary plays in upholding the rule of law.

 

The visit to the Victoria Prison was a poignant experience, allowing students to explore the prison cells, hear stories of inmates, and witness the living conditions endured by those who were incarcerated. In addition to the guided tours, students were given the unique opportunity to engage in interviews with both local and Western foreigners about heritage conservation and revitalization efforts in Hong Kong.
